What
About
Silica?
Crystalline Silica itself is not inherently unsafe—it is one of the most common minerals on earth and is found in materials like quartz, granite, and sandstone. The real risk comes from how it is handled: cutting, grinding, or polishing these materials without proper safety measures can release fine crystalline silica dust, which, when inhaled over time, may cause serious lung diseases such as silicosis. With the right controls in place—such as wet-cutting techniques, ventilation, protective equipment, and proper training—silica-based surfacing materials can be fabricated and installed safely.
According to the NKBA’s recent article “Spotlight on Surfacing & Safety: What the Latest Verdict Means for the Industry” (August 2025), a California jury reaffirmed that silica-based countertops are safe when handled correctly, underscoring that health risks stem from poor workplace practices rather than the material itself. The piece highlights how industry groups like the Natural Stone Institute and manufacturers are responding with stricter OSHA-aligned safety protocols, new training programs, and even low- or zero-silica product options.
We have been very proactive in responding to any concerns our customers have expressed on this issue, and have introduced a new line of low-crystalline silica options to choose from. If you have any concerns regarding this or any other issue, please feel free to contact us any time.
